A building in an industrial area. The energy efficiency amelioration project begins while the building is already under construction. The prefabricated reinforced concrete under production allows small changes in volume. The intervention modifies the shape of the office head, where the variation of the shell is more evident. The walls are organized according to a polygonal shape that south-faces the windowed sides, drawing a changing surface marked by deep vertical cuts. Therefore the side perspectives from the south show a wholly glassed building, whereas those from the west show a totally blind building, except for the entrance.
This leads to a double-height hall crowned by a vast skylight, reception and hub of internal distribution. The whole building, from the foundations, is thickly insulated; the quality of the windows – with solar screenings – and of the systems contribute to achieving a high energy efficiency, 21 kWh/m2 per year is the energy need of the offices, 29 kWh/m2 per year (average) of primary energy. Controlled mechanical ventilation with heat recuperator for offices and exposure, wood chip boiler, solar thermal; free-cooling in the production area and geothermal power for the offices for summer conditioning, are the main characteristic of the system.
