Renovation of a traditional rural building, located on the outskirts of the old centre and facing a canal.
The energy approach is to radically ameliorate the existing building. The traditional pattern of living unit and rural unit with portico under the same pitch is maintained, but improved with a high deployment of insulations, both on the roof covering and on the walls. The side of the original building facing the canal has the best exposure to the sun. Therefore, two deep cuts are made in the wall, to accommodate great windows with mobile shadowing, allowing sight and passive solar gain.
The interior is designed keeping its constitution with strong walls and sometimes barrel vaults and in rebuilding the ceiling with non-treated solid wood. The care for details, both external and internal, does not reveal the high efficiency of the shell, maintaining the typical rural look of the building and its blending with the surroundings.
The energy need obtained in terms of primary energy is 26 kWh/m2 per year, almost a tenth of the original building.
