In a flat area, on an allotted site, the planning of a building in three wings surrounding a central court allows the privacy of an open space.
The building is essentially a massive external shell with bearing walls in reinforced concrete. Pierced by slit windows, these walls embrace a glass belly, which opens towards the court and the south.
Most of the glass surface is thus south-facing, the orientation that allows maximum results in winter passive solar.
The high level of interior comfort is assured by a controlled mechanical ventilation system with heat recuperator and by the distribution of heat. Exposure, quality of double-glazing windows, cork paneling, wood fiber placed in the ventilated covering, all this allows the building to reach a high level of efficiency, 19 kWh/m2 per year of the primary energy need. The little heat needed in winter comes from an heat pump air-water, which also satisfies the residual need for hot sanitary water.
The building was chosen for an LCA study of energy costs from "birth to the grave", run by the Turin Polytechnic in 2007. It is an important evaluation that compares the energetic costs of an efficient building with those of a building of similar dimension built according to all the legal standards.
